to be the transfer of most of the engineering depart- ments from the main building and from scattered adjacent buildings to a single block of buildings specially designed for the purpose, for which there is reason to believe that a suitable site will be available. Chemistry, Physics and Biology could, as a next step, be transferred to specialized buildings on the estate itself, for which the excellent modern schools of Physiology, Pathology and Tropical Medicine, the gifts of Mr. Ho Fook, of the late Mr. Chan Kai Ming and of Mr. Ho Kom Tong, respectively, are admirable precedents. The transfer of the Library would also be a possible form of relief. Assuming the Engineer- ing Department already to have moved, the main buildings could then be extended at the back, so us to form a quadrangle. An annual entry of 250 students could probably be thus provided for.
With its present resources, the University is most seriously crippled in respect of equip ment and maintenance, although efforts have been made in recent Budgets towards additional provision under this bead. As the extensive buildings of the University grow older the annual expenditure on upkeep must increase, unless the buildings are to deteriorate, while the new standard of efficiency in the Faculty of Medicine implied by the Rockefeller bencfaction is bound to mean increased expenditure on maintenance in connection with the intermediate medical sciences. No exoct estimate can be formed of the aggregate of this class of relatively small expenses, which vary from year to
